WordCampers keep up to date

WordcampNZ featured in the NZ herald Technology section today in a piece called
WordCampers keep up to date. Go there to read the full piece or here is a snip.

Kemp says getting 100 people to give up a fine weekend to discuss a piece of software shows New Zealanders have taken WordPress to heart.

The organisers identified at least 500 New Zealand sites using the platform, including everything from the Stock Exchange to the AUT and Whitereia journalism schools to the Grey Lynn Community Centre and the Topp Twins.

The State Service’s Commission’s e-government site and the Te Ara Signposts site which points to the Encyclopaedia of New Zealand also use WordPress tools.

Kemp says people can’t just rely on one tool and effective campaigns are likely to employ a number of channels as they attempt to get the kind of viral lift-off that is possible in an internet-connected world.

“One interesting thing at the event itself was a guy volunteered to tweet live, and ended up doing 700 tweets over the weekend.

“We also had people with video cameras, so some of the presentations went up in various locations. We had live streaming, and at one point we had more than 100 people watching.”

Wordcampers keep up to date (as a single page)

Very special thanks again to everyone who made this possible especially Dan, Anthony, the sponsors, Xero, MagnumMac, nzwireless, CoffeeSupreme, Concept to Reality, Idealog magazine, Eziweb, MyHost, the Victoria Bowling Club and all of the individual helpers.

Brett Taylor @glutnix was the main tweeter for the two days and deserves a medal.

And special shout-outs to speakers who came from all over NZ, Australia and the U.S. (Matt and Janetti) for WordcampNZ. We’ve already had some incredible feedback from many of you.

Stay in touch with fellow campers and and the local WordPress community.

Matt on Kim Hill Show

Kim Hill will be interviewing Matt Mullenweg for the Saturday morning show. They will be on from 8:30 – 9am tomorrow morning.

Podcasts from Saturday Morning show are here.

Update: Matts podcast is here .mp3 file

8:35 Matt Mullenweg Photographer, jazz musician and entrepreneur Matt Mullenweg is the co-founder of the popular open-source blogging software and hosting service title=”WordPress, which runs millions of weblogs around the world.

Matt is one of PC World’s Top 50 People on the Web, Inc.com’s 30 under 30, and Business Week’s 25 Most Influential People on the Web. He blogs at ma.tt, and is visiting Wellington for WordCamp New Zealand, an “unconference” for WordPress users (8-9 August).”

Kim Hill - Saturday show on Radio NZSo what is Kim Hill, unquestionably one of New Zealand’s finest current affairs interviewers, really like?

The answer, if you listen to her programme long enough, turns out to have been obvious all along. I think I’m just like the way I am on the radio. I mean, you haven’t got time to put on a face, you haven’t got time to pretend to be anything other than you are – otherwise, you’d drive yourself bonkers!

So, in essence, what you hear on the radio is what you get in real life? Yeah, yeah. With a few expletives deleted.

Read more about Kim Hill. The Saturday show is Produced by Mark Cubey.

Lunches & Volunteers

We are only a couple of days out. If you have booked you should have received an email with most of this but just in case, here are some logistics items to help the process go smoothly on Sat morning.

Some of this we have to order ahead and pretty much noon Thursday is the deadline. We had a handful of tickets left but our limit is 100 are we are so very close.

Lunch will be sandwiches, wraps, fruit, soup etc..

We will need a few helpers to do some lunch related tasks please. We are thinking about using the BBQ to do some sausages or something quick on the Sunday lunch as an extra.

Do we have a BBQ king or queen who might like to take charge of that? Maybe BYOS (bring you own sossie) or is that too casual? Please let us know by contact form /reply email if you have special requirements and we’ll do our best to help out.

We have heard from a few people about gluten and other. We will have a selection of vegetarian eats too.

Volunteers

We will be needing volunteers to help out for short periods at the conference itself. Helpers needed for name cards, registration & T-shirts, handing out information bags & goodies, Sat Dinner menu / indicative numbers. We may need volunteers to help Sponsors, Speakers & Media.

Thanks to those of you who have already volunteered we have a core team now. We are meeting some of you on Friday morning to run through venue checks so if you might have some time then please let us know.

Besides the usual last minute things on the day we’ll also be helping build at least one website. You chance to make a personal difference. Drop us an email if to are keen to help. Hit reply and say what your preference is.

Also- if anyone local has a van we could call upon for back-up if we have to dash to a hire place or similar on the Friday before that could be very useful. Use the contact form or if you have the email reply to that.

Saturday Dinner – at Temperance

This is an optional dinner on 3rd floor of Temperance. When you check-in on Saturday morning from 8:30am onwards we’ll ask for best guess on if you will be coming for drinks and dinner .

We have have simplified the menu to help the kitchen and if you can think about these items and pick one (most likely) from Fish and Chips, Pizza, Beef burger and the pork spare ribs as these tend to be the easiest and fastest to prepare. Prices are in $15-20 for those. They have Gnocchi and Cheese and Tomato pizza available for the vegetarians and also the sides of crisp salad and seasonal vegetables.

The venue is (http://www.thetemperance.co.nz) Located 8 Cambridge Terrace And 17-19 Blair Street,

Saturday Dinner

We have been looking at the best way to arrange an optional dinner on the Saturday night of #wordcampnz .

For most conferences it is the informal hanging out before and after official events that is often the most fun.

The idea is to pick a venue that is not too formal, has a price  range that is easy on the pocket and close enough to the venue so that transport is not an issue.

Update: The venue is http://www.thetemperance.co.nz

Located 8 Cambridge Terrace And 17-19 Blair Street, Wellington and about 10 mins walk from the Bowling Club venue.

A bonus would be if they have function rooms that can be private if needed and can accommodate anything from 40 to 100 people.( Note: We have a whole floor booked for wordcamp.)

If it has everyone’s favourite drink and some different menus that is also a double bonus.

Non-conference partners and friends are welcome.

The plan would be to wander down by 6 pm ish (or earlier) for a few drinks and stay longer to have some bar food or a meal. Kitchens usually like to plan ahead a bit so we will ask you to give us an idea of menu items and rough numbers.

Do you like this idea? Vote below.

Are you keen on an optional wordcamp dinner on Sat evening?

Tentative Schedule Published

Hi All,

We have published a tentative schedule. There are still a few matters being organised right now, however, this is the planned schedule for the time being. There will only be a few modifications and the final schedule will be posted within the next week.

Without further ado, check it out.

BTW the speakers are all volunteers and typically charge largish fees for similar material at other conferences so we are very lucky to have these insights available for a very nominal rate.

We’d love you to join us. Tickets are still available but we are filling up so don’t delay too long.
