If you’re interested in speaking on at WordCamp NZ 2009 then you must

Add your topic, your name, contact details and length of presentation. The inclusion of any topic at the event will be confirmed by listing in the upcoming running order. If topics and speakers overlap we may ask for alternative content directions. For some ideas have a look at other wordcamps.

Please note to take part in a presentation you must be an attendee (i.e. have a ticket) at WordCamp NZ.  The exact topics below are subject to change and review processes as the event draws closer. Think of them as working titles in progress. As WordCamp is a live community project we may also use voting to ultimately determine what content gets featured and on Day 2 (the unconference part) what else comes out of the process – that attendees are most keen on hearing more about.

Your Presentation – Guidelines.

Be prepared to submit a PDF summary if asked. Best to include answers to these general questions.

  • Why is your presentation content compelling or interesting to the group?
  • How is your idea different and how does it add value ( saving time etc.) for WordPress users?
  • What and who would benefit most from your content, insights, themes, plugins, approach etc…
  • Who is your presentation aimed at?  Mostly tech? community organisers? bloggers? the business? developers? Other ?
  • Remember live examples are useful – can we see it working?

Even if you are not a presenter please keep in mind that many of the audience will be subject matter experts and please allow time for q & a and expect constructive feedback.

Title: Code without Coding

Many website owners find the coding side of web development to be too complex. They should be able to modify their own site designs easily, without ever having to type a single line of code. The intial automated coding systems produced by PixoPoint web development will be shown, including the development behind the PixoPoint menu plugins. The capabilities built into the current PixoPoint template generator and reasons for open-sourcing the latest developmental system will be outlined. The server-side CSS coding engine which is crucial for the development of these systems will be discussed.

Blogging and social media – as more personal and casual forms of communication – are changing the dynamics of the interface between civil servants and the public. The Public Service Code of Conduct states that civil servants must be fair, impartial, responsible and trustworthy. What civil servants say publicly is typically subjected to internal discussion and checked and verified before publication. Protocols specify who can and who can’t speak to the media. Social media presents new challenges to these processes. Lively and Lunchbox blogs, established by the presenter, will be used as examples of how blogging is changing the way government communicates with the public.

Customer relationship marketing used to be all about structured sales conversations and now it is  more open ended and exploring engagement tools for the online world of customers. We used to talk about closed loop but that horse has left the stable a long time ago. Where to for CRM? and how can WordPress help us with that? How businesses engage with blogging and social media will redefine their entire marketing process.  The challenge is to find ways of improving customer service and marketing delivery using whichever channel works best. Business implications perspective. “This is the era of the “mashup campaign,” using a lot of tools and informed by an overarching strategy. ..” Some approaches and examples.

Hi, I work for Clear Interactive in Melbourne. We’ve just started working on a User Experience re-write of the WordPress for iPhone app (http://iphone.wordpress.org/2009/06/01/a-change-is-in-the-air/). I’m interested in attending WordCamp NZ and presenting on the mobile blogging experience and how we plan to improve it for all WordPress users.

Title: Using WordPress to build Communities

Miraz will talk about building a community around a WordPress blog – based on her experience with an online Retreat and other projects.

Miraz is one author of the WordPress 2 Visual Quickstart Guide, and of a series of ebooks intended for users of WordPress (rather than techies and web developers).

Title: Blogging and NZ Media Law

Steven will talk about NZ Media law and blogging in New Zealand. How does the law of defamation apply online? Can a blogger be liable for others’ comments in threads? Can bloggers be prosecuted for contempt of court? Can they be sued for invasion of privacy? What copyright rules apply?

Steven is a frequent commentator on Radio NZ’s Nine to Noon show and MediaWatch. He was also legal adviser to TV consumer show “Fair Go”. More recently, he has given legal advice on Nicky Hager’s last two books. And recently, he managed to persuade the Court of Appeal to un-ban Anne Hunt’s book “Broken Silence”.

Steven written a book called Media Minefield to help people understand the decisions of the Broadcasting Standards Authority and the Press Council, and the laws of defamation, privacy, contempt of court, breach of confidence and trespass.

SPEAKERS: Craig & Linda Martin, Dan Roberts

WordPress is the most popular CMS for industry travel bloggers and those living on the road.

Dan Roberts, Managing Director of Xebidy Strategic Design gives an industry overview of WordPress in the Australia/New Zealand market and how WordPress works alongside Xebidy’s Travel Generation social bookmarking project.

Craig and Linda Martin, hosts of the Lonely Planet award-winning Indie Travel Podcast, discuss the practicalities of travel blogging with WordPress including security, managing multiple authors and working with podcasting and multimedia tools.
